Jean Fried picture

PP&D Project Scientist Jean Fried has been invited to speak at the Forum on “Cutting Edge Technologies for Water Services: Applications in Africa” at the U.S. State Department on Thursday, June 26, 2008. Dr. Fried will be discussing the December 2008 UNESCO-UCI International Conference on Water Scarcity, Global Changes and Groundwater Management Responses.

The Forum is sponsored by the U.S. National Committee for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Division of Water Sciences. This December 2008 UNESCO-UCI conference will be the first UNESCO water conference of the International Hydrological Programme held in the U.S. UNESCO Director-General, Mr. Koichiro Matsuura will be one of the presiders. Also Ralph Cicerone, the previous UCI Chancellor and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, will be chairing a panel discussion.

At the forum, leading U.S. scientists, engineers and water resource specialists will review current and anticipated water-related technologies with the international community and identify needs in freshwater research, technology transfer, and capacity-building programs. Participants will exchange information and ideas on how science can help nations better address water problems like drought and drinking water availability and safety. The discussion will focus on developing countries facing the most severe shortages, especially those in Africa.

Listen to Scott Bollens, planning, policy & design professor, comment on the fight between developers and environmentalists over the 241 toll road extension. KPCC, Feb. 5, 2008.

There’s a real change in mentality going on here among developers and environmentalists in terms of what Orange County is. We’re starting to run out of green field, pristine land. So these battles represent the last pieces of the puzzle in the maturation of what now is a pretty fully built-out suburban county.
