Excellence in Research Program

The Department of Psychology and Social Behavior has developed the Excellence in Research Program to provide students with an opportunity to gain advanced research experience in a structured two-year program followed by a three quarter participation in the School of Social Ecology’s Honors Seminar.

At the end of the program all students fulfilling the program requirements will receive the Psychology and Social Behavior Excellence in Research Award. Each year the best graduating student in the program will be selected by a committee of PSB faculty mentors and be awarded $300 in the form of a book store gift certificate.

Overview of Requirements for PSB Excellence in Research Program

  • The program is open to PSB majors
  • Successful completion of the Social Ecology Honors Program
    • Applications due in spring quarter of junior year.
    • Requirements for an application to the SE Honors program are:
      • 3.2 UC GPA and 3.5 GPA in upper-division SE major courses at the end of winter quarter of junior year.
      • Submission of a brief research proposal.
      • Letter of support from an SE faculty member who agrees to serve as mentor.
      • Commitment to enroll in all three courses of the Honors Program sequence in senior year: H190ABW
      • Official UCI Transcript
    • Completion of a faculty supervised research project during three quarters of the senior year. A research paper or a conference presentation (poster or oral) must be completed by the end of the senior year.
    • Go to the SOCIAL ECOLOGY HONORS PROGRAM WEBSITE for more detailed information.
  • 3.5 overall GPA @ UC at the end of the senior year.
  • Completion of SE10 (by fall of the junior year), SE13 (by winter of the junior year), SE111 (during winter of the junior year) and P190 (during spring of the junior year) with "A" or "B" grade.
  • Participation in mentored research during two quarters of the junior year.
  • Submission of APPLICATION (WORD) or APPLICATION (PDF) after successful completion of all requirements. The deadline for submission is the end of the third week of Spring Quarter (Friday@ 5:00 pm)

Course Requirements

Participating students take a set of advanced courses in methodology and statistics (SE10, SE13, SE111, P190), in addition to the SE Honors Program Sequence (H190ABW). All courses must be completed with a grade of "B" or better. Because SE10 is a prerequisite for SE111 and SE13 is a prerequisite for P190, it is critical that SE10 and SE13 be taken as early as possible (i.e., in the freshman or sophomore year, or for transfer students in the fall and winter quarter of the junior year). SE 111 and P190 should be completed by the end of the Junior year.

  • SE10: Research Design (or equivalent), course is prerequisite for SE111
  • SE13: Statistical Analysis in Social Ecology (or equivalent), course is prerequisite for P190
  • SE111: Advanced Research Methods (offered once per year in winter quarter)
  • P190: Applied Statistics in Psychological Research (offered once per year in spring quarter)

Research

Participating students will gain extensive research experience by participating in mentored research. In their junior year, students will establish a mentoring relationship with a PSB faculty mentor. In the senior year, students are required to conduct an independent research project under the supervision of their faculty mentor. By the end of the senior year, students need to prepare a senior research thesis or report, which can be a paper or a presentation at a scientific conference (e.g., oral or poster presentation at the UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium held each May).

Junior Year

  • Find a faculty mentor
  • Become involved in faculty directed research while enrolled in P196 (PSB Research Seminar), SE198 (Directed Study) or SE199 (Independent Study) with their faculty mentor for two quarters. PSB faculty post research assistant positions on the PSB RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES WEBSITE

Senior Year

  • Perform mentored research while enrolled in the School of Social Ecology's honors seminar sequence (H190ABW)
  • Submit a senior research thesis or a report at a scientific conference

Schedule

Award Procedure

At the end of the program (by Friday 5:00 pm 3rd week of Spring Quarter) students need to submit an APPLICATION (WORD) or APPLICATION (PDF). All students fulfilling the formal requirements will be awarded the certificate for "Psychology and Social Behavior Excellence in Research". The best student will be selected by a committee of PSB faculty based on their overall performance in the program and the senior research project and will receive a special recognition in the form of a $300 book store gift certificate. This additional honor will be noted on the PSB Excellence in Research award certificate.
