The Department of Planning, Policy, and Design at UC Irvine invites applications from exceptional scholars with demonstrated ability for intellectual leadership in urban planning. We seek candidates whose research links core planning topics to questions of regulation or institutions in spatial or physical contexts. The topical area of focus is open, but candidates who bolster existing department strengths are preferred. Department faculty members have topical research strengths that include design-behavior research, environmental sustainability, housing, inequality and economic opportunity, international development, land use, human security, public health, public management, regional governance, transportation, water policy, and urban design. We seek scholars with a Ph.D. in planning. Candidates with doctoral degrees in related fields and whose background and research show clear evidence of strong ties to planning scholarship and practice may also be considered.
The Department of Planning, Policy, and Design is an international leader in planning research. The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that UC Irvine ranked fifth in scholarly productivity among U.S. planning programs in a 2007 assessment by Academic Analytics. The department offers a Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree and a Ph.D. degree in Planning, Policy, and Design. We are also developing a proposal for an undergraduate major in Urban Studies and are partnering with other units at UC Irvine to develop a Master of Public Policy degree. The successful candidate should be able to contribute to these degree programs.
For full consideration, candidates should apply by September 15, 2008. The position will remain open until filled. The start date may be negotiated, but we anticipate that the successful candidate will start by July 1, 2009. Candidates should apply online at the link below and submit a cover letter, c.v., three letters of reference, publications or writing samples, and a brief statement of teaching interests and capabilities.
