GRE Preparation

What Is the GRE?
Before you begin the application and admission process to UC Irvine, you must complete the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) General Test (UCI code: R4859). In addition to the General Test, the GRE also has many subject-matter specific tests. You only need to prepare for and take the General Test for admission to the new CLS degree program at UC Irvine.

The General Test measures verbal, quantitative, and analytical skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. The test consists of three scored sections.

  • Verbal: 30-minute section (30 questions)
  • Quantitative: 45-minute section (28 questions)
  • Analytical: Two separately timed writing tasks (45 and 30 minutes)

Where and When Do I Take the GRE?
The GRE General Test is an online test administered at qualified testing centers by appointment. There are over 30 testing centers in California and hundreds more around the country and world. We recommend that you take the GRE as soon as possible as you must have completed this step before you begin the application process to UC Irvine. For more information about schedules, testing sites, registration and all other questions, please visit the official GRE web site at http://www.gre.org.

How Much Does It Cost to Take the General Test?
The test fees are $105 for the US, US territories, and Puerto Rico and $130 for all other locations. If you need to reschedule your GRE, there is a $40 rescheduling fee. These fees are paid directly to the Educational Testing Service, not to UC Irvine. For more information on fees and scheduling, please visit the GRE web site.

How Can I Prepare for the GRE?
The GRE web site offers some free test preparation software and test prep books. However, if you would like more in-depth study, you may wish to purchase a study guide book from the UCI bookstore. The bookstore offers many GRE study aid books and can ship them directly to your home.

If you prefer to take formalized GRE prep courses, Kaplan has locations all over California and the country and offers many different options including overview courses and classes covering the specific three areas of the GRE: verbal, quantitative, and analytical.
